"It's ruffley and looks like underwear"

First of all, don't ever eat at the school cafeteria-any school cafeteria. I don't care if you attend the Culinary Institute of America, they should all be shut down. And if you are dying of starvation and must eat to survive and the only source of "nutrition" is a school cafe, stay away from anything that contains mayonnaise, chicken, ranch dressing, sour cream, cheese, meat or anything processed, cooked or uncooked. But don't listen to me-I'm bitter. I ate at school yesterday, which I have done on occasion because its free. I won't ever do it again. I technically didn't get sick, partly because of the 2 glasses of wine and 4 tylenols I took, but a little piece of me died yesterday. I felt like my stomach was going through some mytosis process, splitting in halves, then splitting again and again and again. In fact, I may well have of 1.2 million stomachs. Thanks Java Juction. Thats how I felt this morning. By the time I got home this afternoon I was feeling better so I went to Publix to grab something for dinner. I shopped, bought weird stuff I may never eat, and dumped my loot in the Jeep. I was so excited about taking a sip of my icycold Vitamin water that I mistakenly left my purse in the abandoned shopping cart (which, by the way, I didn't walk back to the cart corral.) As soon as I realized that I had left it I turned around, instinctually thinking it would be right where I left it. When I got in the very busy parking lot a mere ten minutes later, the cart was still there, but no purse. I went inside and frantically searched, grabbing a nice looking man to aid in the hunt. We put out an Amber alert for the purse that looks like blue and green panties, but to no avail. I broke down and publicly cried, looking at everyone in the parking lot with a suspicious sneer. My cash, my colored pens that I just spent $6 on, my ipod earphones, my passport, MY LIPGLOSSES, my phone with all of my pictures on it (some are the type you don't want to share), everything gone. I immediately declared it stolen. Less than 2 hours later the store called my mom and notified her that they had my purse. Of course I had already cancelled everything, but am thrilled to have it back. Moral of the story: people are inherently good, don't lose sight of that. Keep the faith (and no cafeteria food-EVER.)

The Funniest Thing...

Some of you will get this analogy, for the others just feel sorry for those of us that do.
Today, as I was enjoying the warm Florida sun in the "quad," eagerly anticipating class, a fellow student made this perfectly stated comment: "Going from Civil Procedure with Shannon to Property with Jorgensen is like going from the Dentist to the Proctologist." Let me add that it is also like paying double for the services! Welcome to my Thursday afternoon!

The Funniest Thing...

I have two funny things to report today, you decide which is the funniest.
First, my dog recently learned that she doesn't have to jump down to the floor and then back up on the couch to get from one to the other. You see, I have hardwood floors and every time she takes a leap there is a good shot that she'll loose her footing and just eat it. Now that she has figured out that she can travel around the room without touching the floor, she is stoked. Today, for no apparent transportation purposes, she jumped back and forth between the two couches. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. I laughed out loud.
Second, as I was coming home from dinner with my supersexy neighbor and his brother, I ran into some manual transmission difficulties. You see, I have a manual transmission automoblie, but don't really know what to do with it. Even though I have to go up the same hill at least once a day in my driveway, I still manage to either stall out or almost blow my engine every time. This time I did both. It was more funny to me today because I got to share the experience. Usually I just laugh at myself. T I'm not so sure that practice makes perfect. I always think I am improving, but I think I am just optimistic. If anyone has any usefull tips (besides trading in my car for an automatic) feel free to pass them on.

Old Flickers

It's easy to forget that we are who we are today, because of how we spent our yesterdays. When flames flicker and burn out, leaving nothing but ashes behind, its too easy to just see the pile of ashes, rather than to remember the warmth and light that the fire once provided. Relationships are never perfect, sometimes, as cold as it may sound, they may simply serve a purpose--to get you where you are really supposed to be. But, no matter what happened, good or bad, we always carry pieces of that person with us, whether we like it or not. I got a call today from an old companion; I call him that because there really wasn't much of a spark, but more of a flickering warmth: we were friends and roommates disguised as lovers. He was seeking my approval of his new girl, and surprisingly, seeking my advice on how he might do things differently this time around. It's nice when you reach a point when you can remove yourself from a situation and be objective. In our old place we had a wacky light on the patio that would sometimes come on and sometimes just flicker. As we were in the process of going our separate ways, which was a tortuous month long ordeal, we would sit on the patio and try to figure things out. I would say that we were like the light on the patio: sometimes there was a spark, but you could never count on the light, which after all, was the purpose of the thing. He would say that a random spark was enough. I disagree. That was all of the advice I had to give him today: don't settle for anything less than a bright, 100 watt, 3 way halogen with a battery back-up that works even when the electricity stops. It's not worth the time and energy. Admittedly love is not always easy and its completely unrealistic to think that any relationship can be flawless, but it can be a constant source of light. My point is (I think) that regardless of whether past relationships may have been unpleasant or amazing, we learn, and part of who we are now is because of what we went through. Even if we learn what we don't want, ,or how we don't want to act, or want other people to act, or what brings out the best or worst in us, we learn. So even though the warmth may not come from an obvious source, it is there, somewhere, we just have to look back and find it.

Capitalist Pig

Oink, Oink! I have become what I hate. What is it about a great pair of shoes, not even an actual pair of shoes, but just the idea of a great pair of shoes, that can make you abandon all of your cherished ideals and become a slave to the man? Is it the supple calf leather, the 4" stilletto heel, or perhaps its the shape reminiscent of a slice of pizza. Whatever it is it takes over the sensibilities and leads to reckless abandon. Yesterday, I made the fatal error of opening an email from Zappos. Usually I have the willpower and resisitance to just click "delete" without even being tempted by "free shipping," "New:From Nicole Miller," or the one that gets me every time "We have something we know you'll love, Malinda!" Yesterday, all it took was "New Styles." Feeling like I might be left out of the latest trend, I went against my better judgment and opened the ad. 756 pairs of shoes later, I realized that I have a problem. With sweaty palms, my heart raced each time I clicked "Next Page," knowing the perfect pair could be just around the corner. I took note of my flustered condition and went offline. All I could think about was buying some shoes. The need for consumption overwhelmed me. I need a few days to cool off. I still have a yearning for some new shoes (or maybe jeans, I just opened an email from eluxury a few minutes ago!), but I think I'll go to an actual store and browse. Maybe the discomfort of walking through the store in my 4" stilletto, supple calf leather, pizza slice shoes will dissuade me from making an impulse buy. Maybe.

The Funniest Thing...

Today, as I was leaving for school, I encountered a series of unfortunate events. First note that I was leaving at 10 AM, so an early morning cloud of confusions is no excuse. At approximately 9:42 (about 18 minutes earlier than I have to leave to get to school on time) I gathered my books and my work uniform and headed out the door. As I approached the elevator I realized I didn't have my tie (I have to dress in drag at work: It's not as much fun as it sounds.) So I go back, shirt in hand, to get my tie. I get back to the elevator and notice I left my shirt inside (the very shirt I had just taken to the elevator.) Naturally, since health codes prohibit me from waiting tables topless, I go back for the shirt. I pick up the shirt and head back to the elevator--this time I was smart enough to return for the shirt empty-handed. All is well--until I get to the car. Those of you not familiar with my apartment may not realize the gravity of the situation here. I live on the 6th floor; to get to my car I have to go down to the 1st floor and then take a separate elevator to the 3rd floor of the parking garage--all the while carrying 4 law books, a laptop, a 9 piece work uniform, Diet Dr. Pepper, keys in hand, and 2 notebooks. So I get to my car. The pants, that I thought were under the shirt were MIA. I go back to 603 and find them curled up in the cozy dryer (full of wrinkles of course.) So I bust out the iron and fix them up and go on my merry way. Crisis somewhat averted. So thats the funniest thing that has happened to me so far today ( who knows what the afternoon will bring, I am yet to put on my uniform and see if all of the pieces are present)--what's the funniest thing that has happened to you. It doesn't have to be super funny, just the funniest part of your day.
